Arranging Care- where to start?
When it comes to arranging home care for yourself or a loved one, making the right decision can feel overwhelming. Whilst cost is certainly a factor, the quality of care and recommendations from others often play an equally important role. A good place to start is with a free Local Authority care needs assessment.
Everyone in the UK is entitled to a free care needs assessment from their Local Authority. This assessment determines whether you (or your loved one) qualify for support. If you do, the Local Authority has a legal obligation to either provide or arrange the necessary care services.

Are You Eligible for Financial Help?

Domiciliary Care can be expensive, and not everyone qualifies for financial assistance. In England, if you have £23,250 or more in savings, you’ll be expected to self-fund your care.
If your savings fall below this threshold, the next step is a financial assessment (also known as a "means test"). This will calculate how much you can afford to contribute based on:
• Your regular income (e.g. state pension, attendance allowance)
• Savings and investments
• Property ownership (excluding your main home if you still live there)
Couples are assessed individually, meaning only the finances of the person requiring care will be considered.

If your savings are below £14,250, they will not be included in the means test. In this case, the Local Authority will fund your care after considering your income.
